ARTIST PROFILE | Duma Collective

Alex Farrar, born in Corona CA, is a recent graduate of Indiana University, earning a Bachelor of Music degree in saxophone performance and a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics. Alex began his studies at IU with Dr. Otis Murphy in the fall of 2019 and currently studies with Dr. Thomas Walsh. In his artistic life, Alex works to fuse together jazz and electronic musics, bringing together the sound design and grooves of EDM, IDM, ambient, house, and dnb (among others) with the harmonic language and improvisatory techniques of jazz. In the fall of 2023, Alex created the DUMA Collective, bringing in top musicians from the jazz program at the Jacobs School of Music to embody this fused genre of genres. Among these musicians is Nate Sorrentino who joins Alex on the Crump Theater stage for Hutchfest. 

Nate Sorrentino, born in Munster IN,  is a current 3rd year student achieving a B.M. in Jazz Studies at Jacob’s School of Music at Indiana University. He started with piano lessons at the age of 4, and began studying jazz at the age of 13. Nate is a self taught multi-instrumentalist, playing drums, bass and guitar, as well as a composer, arranger, and producer. Through IU, he has played in the Latin Jazz Ensemble directed by Wayne Wallace, and the Natalie Boienk Ensemble, performing with Wycliffe Gordon in 2023. Beyond playing in the big bands and combos at the Jacobs School of Music, Nate performs with extracurricular groups. Nate is also a photographer, has learned how to tune pianos, and plans on pursue his certifications to become a piano technician after his B.M. In his free time he enjoys drawing and pool.
